Slaughter campaign achievements
This is what our investigations have achieved so far:
- Most importantly, countless people have adopted an animal-free diet as a result of our work.
- Good news, England! Legislation requiring mandatory CCTV in all slaughterhouses in England came into force on 4thMay 2018. Further detail is available on the government website: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/cctv-to-be-introduced-in-all-slaughterhouses-in-england-in-2018
- News update, Scotland. Animal Aid responded to the government consultation for mandatory CCTV for all Scottish slaughterhouses which opened on the 28thMarch. We also published supporter guidance notes to help enable them to do the same. (Animal welfare is a devolved issue, so the governments of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have to implement CCTV themselves, Parliament in Westminster cannot impose it.)
- News update, Wales. Lesley Griffiths Cabinet Secretary for Energy, Planning and Rural Affairs announces announces ÂŁ1.1 million Food Business Investment scheme package of grant aid for small and medium sized slaughterhouses. Aimed at helping ensure âWelfare friendly infrastructure and facilities will be supported and also the installation and upgrading of CCTV monitoring systems.â Wednesday 21st March.
- Animal Aid responded to the government consultation for mandatory CCTV for all English slaughterhouses which opened on the 11thAugust, 2017. We also published supporter guidance notes to help enable them to do the same.
- Two men were jailed for cruelty to animals at Cheale Meats after they beat and burned pigs.
- When the coalition government decided to drop all charges against several other slaughtermen and their bosses, we campaigned for the government department responsible (Defra) to be stripped of its prosecution function. In 2011, that goal was achieved when the CPS took over. Sadly, by then, many slaughterhouse workers had escaped justice.
- Many slaughterers have, however, had their licences permanently revoked.
- Essex slaughterhouse A&G Barber closed down when its customers saw, through our secretly-filmed footage, how bad conditions were.
- Our campaign for CCTV to be installed in slaughterhouses was accepted by the supermarkets. The ten largest â Morrisons, Waitrose, the Co-op, Sainsburyâs, Aldi, Tesco, Lidl, Asda, Marks & Spencer and Iceland â along with wholesalers Booker, have now agreed to deal only with slaughterhouses that have independently monitored CCTV cameras installed.
- Three UK political parties adopted mandatory CCTV in slaughterhouses as a policy or included it in election manifestos.
- Animal Aid has won the support of the British Veterinary Association, the Food Standards Agency and UNISON, as well as many animal protection groups.
- The RSPCA insists that all its approved slaughterhouses have CCTV.
- We called for the time limit for animal welfare prosecutions to be extended to allow time for justice to be done. This has now been achieved.
- Bristol University uses our footage to help train vets.
- Our investigations were featured all over the print and broadcast media, and helped to educate the public about the cruelties of slaughter. These are just a few of the national media headlines:
