Notorious killer of race horses, the Cheltenham Festival, starts today!

Posted on the 11th March 2025

Today is the first day of the 2025 Cheltenham Festival – a four-day event which has claimed the lives of 76 race horses since 2000.

Cheltenham is one of the most dangerous racecourses in the world. From the demanding obstacles to the ‘win-at-all-cost’ mindset of jockeys, this race meeting is gruelling and often fatal for the innocent animals who have no choice but to run for their life on the racecourse.

Furthermore, National Hunt or ‘jump’ racing has killed over 3,000 horses since 2001. This is why Animal Aid is calling for a ban on jump racing, with Cheltenham Festival and Aintree Grand National being the first to go! You can find out more here.

In the last week, Animal Aid have released shocking statistics concerning the number of horses who died as a result of racing on British racecourses in 2024, the number of horses with racing industry passports who were slaughtered, and the number of whip breaches. These horrifying abuses have been analysed in our newly published report, Victims of Abuse in British Horse Racing, and highlight the inherent cruelty of horse racing.

No animal should suffer in the name of ‘sport’.
