Petitions call for vegan options on all public sector menus

Posted on the 22nd October 2018

The Vegan Society have launched a number of petitions, calling for all public sector menus to provide a plant-based option.

Following on from a very successful campaign in Portugal, which now means that all public sector menus must legally provide daily plant-based options, The Vegan Society’s ‘Catering for Everyone’ campaign is calling for all public sector menus – such as school and hospitals – to provide daily vegan options.

Public institutions have a duty to ensure that everybody has access to healthy and nutritious meals.

Vegan food is not only for vegans; it can be enjoyed by everybody. And with such a high emphasis on sustainability and being environmentally friendly, providing vegan food will help people reduce their carbon footprint and impact on the planet. Both the British Dietetic Association and the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recognise that totally plant-based diets are suitable for every age and life stage, and in addition, some studies show that those following a vegan diet have reduced risks of type-2 diabetes, heart disease and certain types of cancer.

As this is a devolved issue, there are separate petitions for England and Wales.
