Huge news! Waitrose has become the latest supermarket to confirm that they will be labelling their own-brand vegan products.
Following Animal Aid’s vigorous #MarkItVegan campaign, Waitrose has confirmed that they are gradually introducing a ‘vegan’ label for their own-brand products that meet the requirement.
The supermarket has said that a lot of work in this area has already been done and that the process will happen as they update current labelling. As with other supermarkets and companies, this new labelling will not feature on products that ‘may contain traces of’ dairy/eggs/other animal products. Nevertheless, this is fantastic news!
This news will delight the over 500,000 vegans, as well as the some 22 million reducetarians in the UK. This will also be great news for those people who purchase food for vegan family members.
Clearly labelling products as ‘suitable for vegans’ in some way has a host of benefits: firstly, it enables those of us who avoid animal products entirely to easily find which products are vegan. Secondly, it also helps non-vegans realise how many delicious vegan options there truly are to choose from.
When veganism is presented as something that is normal, those who may be a little sceptical are more inclined to give it a try.
As a result of this news, the majority of supermarkets in the UK have now committed to labelling their own-brand vegan products!
