It’s not often that we get to report good news, but we have just heard that the City of London Corporation has cancelled a contract which would have allowed the shooting of deer in Epping Forest for ‘sport’.
The decision was made in light of ‘recent public concern’ and followed a well-orchestrated local campaign, which attracted media attention and highlighted the commercial agreement between the City of London Corporation and the Capreolus Club.
On hearing news that the Capreolus Club had been awarded a licence to kill deer in the Forest, Animal Aid immediately submitted a detailed Freedom of Information request to the Council. We have not received a response as yet but we are confident that our questions helped to highlight some areas of concern that may have been overlooked by the Council.
