The Times today (12 May 2016), has revealed that more than 30 abattoirs in the UK are denying government officials access to CCTV footage of animals being slaughtered. CCTV is vital in bringing prosecutions against slaughtermen who commit acts of deliberate violence against terrified animals. Animal Aid’s 2011 undercover investigation resulted in two slaughterhouse workers being jailed after our film showed animals being punched, burned on the face with cigarettes and beaten with paddles. However, CCTV can only be effective if independently monitored, and, though useful, will never stop the horrors that animals experience at slaughterhouses.
