Choose Compassion this Valentine’s Day

Our new farming campaign shines a damning light on the dairy industry. One of the most heartbreaking elements to dairy? The separation of mothers and babies.

To produce milk, a dairy cow must first be made pregnant and give birth to a calf. To stop her calf from drinking all her milk, that calf is taken away from her. This process is truly disturbing: mothers have been known to break out of fields and chase after farm vehicles in pursuit of their stolen babies.

Calves, meanwhile, are so confused by the loss that they will try to suckle fellow calves or inanimate objects like gate handles. Animal Aid recently heard of a case where a calf cried for her mother for so long, that by the end of day, she had lost her voice; left with a croaky, pitiful moo.

Our new TV advert, currently airing across Sky and Channel 4, highlights this suffering which, importantly, is a fundamental part of dairy production – there is simply no milk or dairy product that does not destroy this maternal bond. Cows in the dairy industry will endure the loss of their calves again and again…
