Race horse December Second (IRE) was killed at Newcastle Racecourse on the first day of racing’s return.
The six-year old gelding clipped the heels of another horse during the 5.05pm race and was brought to the ground. In the melee, the stricken horse also brought down another runner, Financial Conduct (IRE), who thankfully survived the tragic incident.
December Second was destroyed on the racecourse as vets could not save him due to the severity of his injuries.
Says Animal Aid’s Horse Racing Consultant, Dene Stansall:
‘Racing has yet again proved that it is not doing enough to prevent horses dying in the most horrific circumstances. Starting racing again with ten races at a meeting is unprecedented and, perhaps not unexpectedly, has resulted in a young horse losing his life. Racing needs independent regulation that puts horse welfare ahead of economic gain.’
