Shocking information from The Food Standards Agency, given to Animal Aid through a Freedom of Information request, detailed that 175 horses with Weatherbys passports were sent to slaughter in England in 2023. This is an increase from 2022, when 148 horses with Weatherbys passports were sent to slaughter.

Ahead of the Grand National three-day meeting, which starts tomorrow, the racing industry has launched a new ‘welfare campaign’ called Horse PWR. This is undoubtedly a response to the growing concern that the industry has been facing, regarding the welfare, aftercare and slaughter of race horses. You can read more about it here.

It is shocking that despite promises made three years ago – after the documentary The Dark Side of Horse Racing (which featured Animal Aid undercover footage) aired – so many horses are still spending their last moments enduring the horrors of the abattoir.

This news comes after it was revealed that 1,428 race horses were slaughtered in Ireland in 2023. 342 of those were just four years old or younger.

Take action for race horses
