Love Animals? Then don't eat them!
Posted 10 February 2010
This Valentine’s, have a heart for the 1000 million farmed animals, bred and slaughtered each year in the UK to end up as food on our plates, and go veggie!
We call ourselves a nation of animal lovers yet we allow animals to be crammed together in cages or sheds, selectively bred to grow unnaturally fast and killed in slaughterhouses where speed and profit are seen as more important than animal welfare. We are brought up to believe that it is acceptable to eat some species, while others are kept as pets. And yet animals bred for their flesh, milk and eggs experience pain, fear and distress in the same way as any dog or cat.
We do not need to eat animal products to live a long and healthy life. In fact, vegetarians have a longer life expectancy because they tend to have lower rates of diet-related diseases, such as obesity, heart disease, diabetes and some cancers.
Going veggie is also much kinder to the planet, as farmed animals use much more land, energy and water than plant-based agriculture.
So this Sunday, open up your heart and dine with compassion - choose veggie.
