Our slaughterhouse CCTV campaign leads to 'new trend in meat industry'

There’s been more important progress for Animal Aid’s CCTV-in-slaughterhouses campaign. The objective is to persuade supermarkets to insist that all their meat suppliers install independently monitored CCTV cameras in both the stunning and the slaughter areas, in order to prevent some of the appalling illegal brutality revealed by our undercover investigations. The law was being broken in seven out of the eight slaughterhouses in which we have filmed.
We had already had two massive breakthroughs, with Morrisons and Marks and Spencer saying ‘Yes’ to the cameras and to the independent monitoring of the resulting footage. Now this week comes a third, with the Co-op also agreeing to independently monitored CCTV cameras! We are keeping up the pressure on the whole supermarket industry with a letter-writing campaign that's launched this week through a mailing to our supporters, and via more national newspaper adverts on February the 5th.
In addition, a supermarket chain, which has not yet agreed to insist on CCTV, has today stated: ’You will be happy to hear that the Animal Aid report and the following campaign initiated a new trend in the meat industry. Many of our suppliers are now working on adapting their CCTV systems to suit controlling the welfare of animals.’ So, we have reason to anticipate more success very soon, and will keep you informed.
Of course, farmed animals will still suffer, and Animal Aid will continue to promote a cruelty-free vegan diet as the only way to stop that completely, but if we can now prevent some of the appalling brutality that our cameras revealed, then we have a duty to do so.
