MP joins Animal Aid in calling for a ban on use of whip

Posted 28 January 2008

Mike Hancock MP has joined Animal Aid’s campaign to ban the use of the whip in horse racing. Speaking to the News of the World yesterday (27 January 2008), Mr Hancock said ‘It's a despicable practice… I believe the whip should be banned.’

His announcement came in the wake of Animal Aid's call for the prosecution of jockey Eddie Ahern under the Animal Welfare Act. Ahern whipped his horse with such excessive force that weals came up on the Thoroughbred’s body. Animal Aid has asked Nottinghamshire police to launch a formal investigation with a view to bringing the case to court.
